  1. Latest version crashes when I try to add a ColorNote widget. Get the message:
The application ColorNote (process.com.socialnmobile.dictapps.notepad.color.note) as stopped unexpectedly.

    Phone is an HTC Hero.

    Any ideas?

  6. great program, but everytime i restart the phone (sprint htc hero), the widget turns into a blank white box and i have to remove it and re-add it.

    any ideas whats going on?

it seems to be related to the same issue experienced with the android picture frame widget and the fact that htc sense is affecting desktop widgets (possibly?)

  7. Hello,

The app is really great and the addition of a checklist put it way over the top. I would love to see the checklist enhanced in the future to sort, probably not dynamically, but it would be great if at startup the unchecked item floated to the top above the checked items.

I'll also second Dominic above that at restart the widgets go blank. Not sure if you have any control over that, but wanted to add the voice.

Thanks for all the hard work.

  8. Hi,
I like your Button Shortcut app. Here's a request: Could you add a companion app to hang up the phone? Here's why: On the Motorola Droid, it's very easy to lose track of the call-in-progress screen; a simple tap while you're on a call sends the phone off onto another app. Once that happens, you need to tap: 1) home button, 2) phone app, 3) call in progress, 4) dial pad button, 5) end call; all before you can end the call!

Having your "Button Shortcuts" invoke a "End call in progress" app would solve a major headache. A shortcut to an "End call" app on the home screen would also be a huge win.

Please let me know if you get this message (your blog has no email contact...)

  9. I find Colornote very useful. Thanks for giving away such a useful program for free.

One request: It would be nice if when you clicked on a note on the home screen it defaulted to edit more rather than just view mode.

  20. Hi - I use this app quite a bit (and really like it!). Following a hard reset the previous data backup items are not visible in the backup screen. Is there a way to make the old backup data visible? The backup points are there, just not visible. Will I be able to recover my notes? I unfortunately have a lot of important data that I didn't save anywhere else . . .

    Thanks for your time.

    One little thing please:

If user don't fill the title of a checklist, draw the first entry of the list into the widget. So the user can always see the topmost entry of the checklist.

  27. Very nice app -- thank you very much! There's nothing else quite like it in the Market.

    Two big issues:

    (1) Note widgets die after restart, as mentioned above. This isn't just an annoyance; it makes the app unreliable.

    (2) The "add widget" process lags in proportion to the number of saved notes. The more notes you create, the longer it takes for the list of notes to appear when you try to add a note to the home screen.

  39. I have a couple of feature requests:

    - In checklists note it would be great to be able to delete all checked notes at once. Imagine a shopping list, once you're done shopping you can one-click clean it up (without deleting the note though).

    - When you add new items to a checklist note, you need to manually pop up the keyboard. It would be great if it was already out, saves a touch :)

    Phone: HTC Droid

Other than that, thank you for an amazing application :)

  40. Any chance of passwordless backup (ideally into something like an XML or JSON file, or even plain text)?

I don't need the encryption, and remembering yet another password is a bit of pain. I could use a text file that I could get off my phone and onto my computer.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is there any way to import text files or does all content have to be created from within ColorNote? I have so many other memos and Outlook notes that I need to import. Otherwise, would pay big money for this great app. Thanks

  44. I am trying to backup Color Notes. I see the backups but I can;t find the files using Astro (file explore utility). I want to ensure the backups are on my SD card as I will be installing Android 2.1 which will wipe all data. I see them if I select backups but I can't find the actual folder containing backups. Where is it?

  47. OK everyone I found out about the backup thing. Hope others read this.
    - You can restore them after hard reset. All you need to do is to go to menu->Backup.
Yes, I know, it doesn`t show any of your backups, and instead prompts you to choose a new password. That`s OK. Just do what it says and in the next step you will see your previous backups.
    - And, Yes. They are stored in the sdcard. the exact location is /sdcard/data/colornote/backup/

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thanks for the info, Moosa! I didn't have to restore but I wanted to delete the older manual backups and your info was right on! :-)

  49. I like the "Share" feature. Unfortunately, the "Share>Colornote" was disappointing. My wife also got ColorNote. I expected to be able to "share" my Color Note with her, ie- send my grocery list to her to be able to open in ColorNote to add to the list; collaborating.

ColorNote should be able to do this. This would make it easier to send a list to each other to complete for whoever gets to the store first.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi. I too "lost" my notes prior to the Android backup. I know they are on my SD card (can see the .dat and .idx files per the location above on my computer). However, I still can *not* get them to appear in my notes application on the Droid? What am I missing?

  54. I am a new HTC droid owner, and ColorNote app user. I like the app, and find it very useful. I really like that a phone number in a note can be dialed just by clicking on the hypertext number.

I must agree with many of the comments about being able to save to plain text, and sync with Outlook. That feature alone would allow me to throw the old Palm thing away. Anyway, if I could export to plain text, I think I could get them into Outlook.

Additionally, I think it would be grand to have shortcuts for certain common text phrases. For example "%ds" would 'type' the current date. "%ts" would 'type' the current time, and "%dt" would 'type' both. A double percent "%%" would not enter a shortcut, but just the single character. It could be an ON/OFF option under the settings. Other shortcuts would be "http://www." and ".com", as well as user defined ones. How grand that would be.

When viewing a note in the selected (not edit) state, one should be able to left/right swipe to go to the prev/next note. A long tap inside a viewed note should go into edit mode (having to hit the pencil button at the top is not intuitive).

    ReplyDelete
  55. Nice, but the input field for new tasks of the todo-style list is way too small, you won't get reasonable length text into it without scrolling. There's plenty of space around that popup, why not use it?

    ReplyDelete
  56. I really like this app. It would be very useful to have the ability to sync notes with the PC, either through outlook, google or colornote.com (if it exists). I love the tool but don't enjoy having to enter all of the text on my handset.

  58. Hi there. I'm new to both Android and Color Note. Love them both. :) I have 2 enhancement requests. First, can you add sub folders to the checklist section? For instance, I want a checklist called Groceries, and then under that I want sub sections labeled Safeway, Albertsons, etc...
Second, on my iPhone I was using an app called Green Grocer and it allowed me to shake my device to put the "checked" items at the bottom of the list and the "unchecked" items at the top of the list. Thanx for your consideration and a great app!

  60. I recently switched phones. And am unable to restore my backed up notes to my new phone. I have the .dat and .idx files in the /data/colornote/backup directory, but ColorNotes asks for my password (presumably the password I set on my old phone) which I don't remember anymore. How can I restore these notes if I don't have the right password?

On another note, it would be awesome if we could adjust the line height on the To Do type list to use less space.

Thanks again for a great program.

  65. Hi, I think there's a small bug in the latest version of ColorNote (1.8.0)... When you set a reminder, it shows a message saying something like "Set for X days from now", but the number of days seems to be 1 short. For example, I set one today (Friday) to go off on Monday. It said that the reminder was set to go off in 2 days from now, which to me means Sunday. Unless it said 2 days, 23 hours or something. Anyway, just a small issue, otherwise I love it!

  68. Great App...some suggestions:
    1) the ability to send suggestions from the app like most apps on the market!!
    2) an option for a smaller UI: There is a lot of wasted space between the lines of the items on a checklist. Having these list as small as the quicknote "text" style pad but still with a checkmark ability is a big wish. It's the ONLY reason I keep looking at other apps.
This "smaller" interface could also apply to the notes when in the "switch view" list form.
I've already set the "small font" option, but that doesn't affect this desired UI.

I see from having to come to the website that I use a number of your apps. That was a nice little find, but I'd still love to be able to send suggestions (not a complainer) via the app from "About" like most apps.

I'll mention some suggestions for consideration that would really blow the other apps out of the water as they have these but just don't have the total package yet either... Ability to do - voice notes, pictures notes, paint notes...and incorporate these into a checklist if desired.

Using an Evo with the Android 2.2 update...

  69. How to restore (import) old notes:
go to: menu -> backup ->enter same master password as old master password if it asks for new master password -> your saved notes should pop up -> tap the note you'd like to restore(it would replace your present notes with the backup notes being restore). -> Voila!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Hi there!

Great app!!! Thnx a lot for that. Here some suggestion for future versions:
    - Add some option so that it's possible to directly enter "editing" instead of only "viewing" when opening on a note. This saves one additional (and not needed) click.
    - Grid view is great, it would be even better (on high-res displays) if there would be options, how many rows & coloums are viewed. Instead of 3 x 4 (on my milestone) 2 x 3 would be great, I think.

    Thanx again and BR! :)

  103. FINDING BACKUP FILE ON SD CARD: I was frustrated not being able to locate the ColorNote data file on my SD Card, despite getting almost all the way through this list of Comments.

I typically just use the "QuickOffice" app that was on my phone natively to review my SD card's content. Turns out that while most everything I need can be seen with that app, the path for ColorNotes can't be seen with it.

Use "Astro File Manager" app instead, free in Android Market, and you'll easily find it within this path: /sdcard/data/colornote/backup/.

  109. Hy,
I love the Colonote app and it's the best notes app ever!! But I've got a problem recently. I updated my Wildfire to Froyo and now, when i want to add new item to the check-list, the pop-up space get so compressed, that i don't see absolutely anything that i'm writing! I have to turn the phone to the landscape view to see normaly. I really hope for an update soon which will resolve this issue!

    ***FAQ***
Q : How do you put a sticky notepad on the home screen?
A : Goto home screen and long press empty space and choose widget, ColorNote will be there for sticking on page.

Q : Where is backed up notepad data at sdcard?
    A : /data/colornote on sdcard

Q : I had to reinstall color notepad and there is an automatic backed up data that was stored but it requires a password and I hadn't set one up in the past. How do I retrieve that information?
    A : Try default password '0000' (numbers)

Q: I forgot my password, how can I change it?
A: Menu -> Settings -> Master Password -> Menu Button-> Clear Password. You will lose current locked notes when you clear password!

  119. FINALLY! I was able to retrieve my backup! I can't give you step by step directions, because when it finally happened, I couldn't remember EXACTLY what I did, I'm sorry. HOWEVER, I'll tell you that after reading post for JANUARY 18, 2011 by luvmetalhead, I followed his QA instructions to "clear" password. It was after THAT step that, I closed the app, then re-opened app BUT NOT using my shortcut but using the original app icon in my app list, then I went NOT to backup but directly to password, set an easy one, then went to "Backup" and was truly able to restore my backup from last week and they are all there! I'm sorry, if these steps are out of order, I truly just was trying everything and it just finally happened. I want to help you frustrated people, because I was there with ya! I really hopes this gets you where it helps you!

  120. I tested 7 note taking apps extensively, and this is by far the best one! Thanks a lot!!! Just two small issues:

1.) I use the app on a HTC wildfire. When adding a new item to a to-do list, the text box to enter the item text is too narrow, actually the field to enter the text shrinks to a 1mm line because of the field of the three buttons "OK, Delete, Abbrechen" which takes quite a lot of space. This problem might happen because of the resolution of the Wildfire screen, which is not very high. I can still edit the text in landscape format, where the three "OK, Delete, Abbrechen" boxes are not visible while entering text, but it would be really nice to be able to enter text also in portrait format, e.g. by letting the boxes appear only after I finished entering the text. I would highly appreciate an according adjustment.
2.) I'm wondering why in the abovementioned boxes the word "Abbrechen" is in German, while the whole app is in english. A "quit" button would be shorter and would better fit to the remaining text. Just an idea...
If something is not clear, please feel free to contact me on reiner_doraATgmx.at.

Anyway, thanks a lot for this really great app!!!

  121. Great! I was able to restore my notes after following the comment on JANUARY 18, 2011 by luvmetalhead; truly saved me a lot of trouble. What I did was just to go to the ColorNote's Menu and choose the 'backup' option and I keyed in the default '0000' password. It worked for me. If you found that it is not working for you, possibly you can refer to the comment dated JANUARY 18, 2011 by luvmetalhead on how to clear the master password and January 29, 2011 7:20 AM for more information.

    Hope this helps.

  123. If you're still having problems with the master password after you've cleared it (following all the steps mentioned above): I still got the master password setup and couldn't bypass it as I had cleared the password. I exited and restarted Colornote, then used 0000 to set the master password. It let me in and restored my notes.

This worked, but I did lose my locked notes to which I never set the password for to begin with.
This solution is simply a workaround, and the bug needs to be addressed. Log it in bugzilla and call it a day. I am somewhat confident a computer science student intern created this app.

  130. First I did the backup and master password thing. I saw nothing! Then I accidentally hit the Search tool at the top (Add Note, clock, magnifying glass - choose this one!). It brought up a list of all my notes. I could then choose one, then hit the Menu key, and choose Restore. I had to do it one by one but I got all my notes back!

  131. I am so frustrated with this app right now that if I could give it a minus 10 I would. I have notes that I can't get to because I don't have the password for the auto backup. I NEVER SET A PASSWORD and that 0000 default password is not working. The stupid little password box just shakes after I press OK. I've tried everything from the above without success. I see the developer isn't responding to these post so they are useless.

  132. Would be awesome if the widgets could be resized so a bigger widget would allow more 'note area' so more of the note could be read (rather than space around a 1x1 note). i.e. a 3x1 widget would allow 3X as much space to show the note, a 3x3 would have 9X as much space.

1x1 widgets only leave room for a few words and when I want to sticky the widget on my screen as a reminder I often want to see more of the note that can be shown on a 1x1.

  133. I use this app, and especially the checklist part, for my weekly grocery shopping. I use the same list again every week, I only deselect the items I need at that moment.

Is it possible to add a long click menu in the checklist so that you can add the number of articles you need? For example, I want 3 cartons of Milk. In edit mode I enter milk. And when I long click milk in checklist mode I get an option to add 1 or to extract 1 (and maybe a third option to delete the item). So when I click add 1 it displays Milk (2), and when I press Add 1 again it displays Milk (3). The return key wil remove the long click menu.

This would be very handy, now I have to edit every item in edit mode.

  139. Hello, I just buy new cool Android device and have looking for functional and comfortable CheckList and Notepad software. I have tested already about 30 applications of this type, but... no one don't satisfy me. At my opinion, your ColorNote is the best CheckList and Notepad software for fast use with short information with great potential!
I ask you to improve some functions of your wonderful ColorNote!
    1. Password behaviour: if any one protect data with password - it's obvious that he don't want to show this information to any one! So, show protected checklists/notes at general(common) list is wrong(incorrect). Also with this type of password protection when user need to open/edit many documents he must enter password for each document - its very uncomfortable. Will be more comfortoble to make "protected groups" - password sets to complete color-group; protected groups hide from genereal (all) list; enter to this group possible only from color-groups chose list; password will be needed to enter only one time when open this group, after that user can work with all documents at this group without needs to enter password every time.
    2. Password options: a) hide documents of protected groups from general (all) list? Yes/No; b) Close protected groups when: Leave group / Leave application; c) set-up different passwords for each color-group - it's not problem with method of protection, that I describe below.
    3. Password protection: I don't know how it's working now, so I describe the best method - encrypt protected color-groups with strong AES 256/512 when storing at device AND also when making Export to SD card.
    4. List filter: there are a lot of place at the top panel of list view (add, sort, search) to add one more button for filter or color-groups change - so user can faster change color-group or make some filters like "Today" or "Notes only".
    5. Edit mode and search panel: your ColorNote is designed for small text that can be scroll faster then will be entered search words, so I think there is no really needed to show search panel at top of the screen all the time - better to make open/close search panel via options. Also closing search panel will add 2-3 text lines!
    6. Completed tasks: make option to autovatically move all competed tasks to bottom (at one task and at general list also).
    7. Size of text and buttons: will be good to add option "Button size follow text size" - so when user chose small text - buttons (at general list, and at checklist edit) will changes accordingly(respectively), also text size better to make one or two more smaller fonts, because for now small font of the general list however a little(rather) big.
    8. The next step, I think, is to add photo and audio notes, but I not use them. Also will be greate to add syncronisation with PC (Outlook) and Mac.
Waiting for your answer to PetrVehovec(at)gmail(dot)com!
    With best regards!

  147. A few suggestions to improve your already great app:

1/ Double sort option(s): I am almost always sorting my lists Alphabetically and THEN by Status. It would be great to do them both at once.

2/ Option to have only a songle line of an entry displayed/previewed in the grid view so 4 entries can be seen instead of usually 2.

3/ When in list edit mode, long-press on an entry could give the option to send that entry to a different list.
(Saves doing all this: edit > select all > cut > delete > other list > edit > new > paste > ok.)

4/ When in list view (not edit) mode it would be useful to delete entries without having to enter edit mode and scroll down to the entry. Perhaps a context menu on long-press of an entry.

Thanks for the app I use it daily!

  149. Hi, firstly I want to say what a great app this is. I use it all the time and highly recommend people to use it.

I recently upgraded my phone and have been trying to restore my backup without success. I know my password and each time i restore a "DONE" message appears onscreen, but I am returned to an empty colornote.

Does the developer know of this issue and is there a solution or have my notes been lost in SD space forever?

It would be great if anyone knows of a solution to retrieving my notes as there is valuable information there that i need to get to.

please contact me on trickyme@gmail.com if there is any information for me.

  151. Okay i found this a few days ago here and now it seems to be gone so here is my take on restoring notes from a old phone to your new phone...
1.)from old phone go to colornote and backup data, also if you havent already done so create a password.
next connect old phone to your p.c open internal or s/d card and select data there should be a colornote file
2.) copy colornote file to your desktop
disconnect phone and pull s/d card to new phone
3.)(if this is the first time you are installing s/d card to phone you will have to wait for the apps to be installed to new phone) from new phone delete /uninstall colornote from manage apps.
4.) cycle phone off and back on then connect to p.c via usb cable, open both s/d card and internal storage if you have both options.
go to data/ and dag and drop file from desktop to file ( i dropped it in both s/d and internal, as even though colornote claims to use s/d card it doesnt seem to see it)
5.)disconnect from p.c and go to market from New phone and reinstall colornote
just for shitts and giggles cycle phone off and on 1 more time.
Go to colornote menu and select backup /enter password and your old notes should be there along with all the older backups as well.
P.S if backup doesnt seem to save in colornote try another backup selection, I had to go back to one from a few days ago.

  152. I've got the same problem as squareyes and Miss-Liberty. I can see the list of backups (all auto backups) after hitting in the password, but when I click on one of them (and click through the warning that it''l overwrite my current notes) it takes me back to the Workspace, shows a "Done" text overlay at the bottom, but doesn't actually show any notes.
